Today we need to share with you a difficult decision: we are cancelling our 2020 summer youth programs. As we considered the challenges and risks of running summer camp in the midst of a pandemic, we could not see a way to safely and responsibly run our traditional programming. (Think: what does social distancing in a cabin with ten other campers look like?) We are hopeful that with time, and as we develop new norms and procedures as a society, we will find a way forward; however, at this time, Camp staff and the Camp Board feel the most responsible decision for Friedenswald is to refrain from gathering youth together from across the region.
For the first time in seventy years, the cabins will be empty of campers and counselors. Mosquito Hollow will be far too hollow without the sounds of popping kernels and raised songs. Surely, somehow, the lack of ripples created from campers’ dives into Shavehead will not go unnoticed. The mysterious ways that a week at camp can soften hearts, strengthen spirits, and give glimmers of hope and joy – this we will miss the most.
While we won’t provide youth summer camps, we are committed to thinking creatively about how we can live into our mission during these days – and to exploring possible avenues for opening the peaceful woods to families or small groups. As we gain clarity on what this might look like, we’ll be sure to share this with you, as we know having a place like Camp Friedenswald to gather – when it’s safe to do so – will be important for us all.
Thanks for your continued support, Camp Friedenswald friends.
Jenna & Naomi
Note that we are not cancelling Family Camp at this time. We’ll keep you updated as decisions are made about future programming.
