On the heels of several days of poor air quality, the Builders gathered July 18-19 for a weekend of connecting with the peaceful woods and friends new and old. Following a strong line of stroms that moved through early afternoon, the skies cleared in time for an afternoon of programs and activities including a hike around Turtle Hill with Bill Minter, paper quilling and tie dye, pontoon rides on Shavehead Lake, and an informative presentation by Dr. Jennifer Kanine of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi in which she shared about the work her team has been doing to restore and tend to the waterways, the land and its inhabitants.
Over 150 people gathered, aged one to ninety-one, to celebrate the summer and past year at Camp Friedenswald. During the annual Builders Meeting, Evan Miller, chair of the Camp Board, reported on strong program attendance and financial support of Camp, along with over 800 days given by volunteers in the past year, painting a picture of a thriving Camp Friedenswad. Gratitude was expressed for all those who have supported Camp throughout the past year, including for those who remembered Camp Friedenswald in their Estate plans. Jenna Liechty Martinn, executive director, shared a tribute for the following people: Eldon & Helen Bargen, Richard “Dick” & Marjorie Baum, Robert “Bob” & Mary Kauffman, Vernon & Shirley King, Roy & Carol Sprunger, and Allen & Marie Yoder. Jenna also reflected on a recent encounter that she viewed through the summer’s theme “Walkin’ in Wonder.” She shared that, “…I had a moment of recognition [sparking something of wonder in me]… Wonder at all the many people, past and present, who have helped to create the camp we know today. Wonder at the staff, the campers, the volunteers and the growth and joy that is encountered in us all. Wonder at the beauty of the water and steadiness of this land. Wonder at the gift of this place in the world and in my life.”
In addition to honoring the current camp staff, including Jonathan Fridely who is celebrating 15 years of service, Jenna provided an update on the Campaign to Sustain Friedenswald. Having completed renovations to Hugel Haus (formerly the Triplex) in the spring, she shared about the next phase of the project which will begin this fall and will include renovation to the Family Suite/Health Center and Tamarack Lodge. Both buildings will receive significant updates and renovations to make them more energy efficient, accessible, and updated to meet the needs of today’s guests and campers. It was noted that the anticipated costs for the two projects combined is just over $600,000.
With appreciation, Jenna noted that with gifts given to date, funds are available to complete the two projects! Additional support is still needed to complete the final projects included to Sustain Friedenswald.
A highlight of the day included a delicious Puerto Rican dinner prepared by Eric Emerson and the kitchen staff. Following fellowship around the table, Builders were invited to join in “Camp trivia” — testing their knowledge of the past and current state of Camp. (Question: When did the first telephone make its way to camp? Answer: 1956!)
Throughout the weekend there were opportunities to hear reflections from the summer staff, learn the summer theme song, and to worship together in song. As is often the case, the Sunday morning worship left Builders and staff alike feeling refreshed, inspired, and filled with hope. One person noted, “The worship service is always a favorite of mine and didn’t disappoint! What a wonderful reprieve from the world’s chaos!”
To sum up the weekend, as one Builder put it, “My wonder walks [during Builders Weekend] were full of WOW! Everytime I spotted another little detail that revealed how many hands took the time to tend: smoothed paths, extra bug spray, delicious and balanced menus, cool and clean cabins, an eye on air quality and masks ready to share, songs that connected stories and prayers, fun and meaningful programming for all ages…The list goes on! Thank you!”
And thank you, Builders! For your presence in the peaceful woods and for your support throughout the year. Camp Friedenswald would not exist today without your faithful commitment to this special place. Hope to see you next summer!
